The Dazzling Narrative of the Classic Mustangs, How the Namesake Originated

Author: Eric Buck
For many car enthusiasts, the Mustang is ruled to be one of the most esteemed. But how did this favorite vehicle really come to be? Well, it all started back in spring of 1964. Lee Iacocca, the General Manager of Ford Motor Company, always thought of having a medium sized sports car and proclaiming it as the next contender in street wars. But Ford decided to go for broke and unveil a brand new type of car. What was born of Iacocca’s budding concept is the “Pony Car”. It was engineered, in the beginning, as a two-passenger modeled after the European-style, but a business-savvy Iacocca knew that the future of this new model banked on a large number of sales. Thus the design was refined further and the Ford Mustang was designed after the Falcon, which was compact in design, so that production expenses could be shaved. This new vehicle was originally named P-51, after the famous fighter plane. But, many comparisons were made to the Mustang, a type of horse and it ultimately became both symbol and theme to the cars. True to its namesake, the Mustang sold 22,000 units on the very first day of it's debut and went on to sell a million more within the next few years thus gaining the respect of both the industry and car enthusiasts during that time.
By the time 1966 came rolling in, the Mustang was developed yet again. They altered the design of the instrument panel to differentiate the Mustang from the Falcon. The 260 cubic inch V8 was also replaced with 2 and 4 barrel types of the 289 cid V8. A year later, a 100 % revampment materialized in the design of the Mustang, these changes include a thicker sheet metal below its belt line, a meaner grille, a hollow tail panel, and a fastback roof line for the fastback design of the vehicle’s body. These 1967 Shelby’s were more advanced in terms of design. It also had more elements that provided luxury to the passenger. The 1967 Shelby’s were the last to be designed by the Shelby-American Company. Every model subsequent were built by Ford with negligible involvement for Shelby. In 1968, the Mustang underwent some more changes. The grille was changed into something simpler and its 427 engines were powered down but even still, they were more than able to get people’s eye when motoring down the streets. Also in the same year was when Ford released what was to be their most infamous engine ever. The 428 Cobra Jet, as it was called, was rumored to have an output of 410 bhp. The Shelby’s were still in production and a new design, a convertible, was also made available. This convertible design was called the Shelby Cobra.
Through the subsequent years of 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973 more adjustments were made to the original Mustang design. In 1969, the Shelby’s that were produced became more oriented to being a luxury car. The Boss Mustangs were also unveiled the same year. These Boss Mustangs were made to qualify for the NASCAR races. By 1970, the public still preferred the Cobra engine to the other engines that were coming out during that time. By 1971, Ford’s many years of being a total performance vehicle were coming to an end. This would also be the only year that Ford’s performance was considered to be declining. In 1973, several mistakes and changes in the rules forced modifications to the design of the Mustang as well. This time, what used to be a car produced for high performance debuted a new model, the Mustang II, with no claims to anything as marvelous as what its descendants had done.

Mustang: Most Wanted Convertible

Author: Jay Stevens
For the second time around, Ford Mustang has been named Wanted Convertible Under $35,000 by Edmunds.com editors.
"These are the vehicles our editorial team would chose to have in our own driveways," said Karl Brauer, Edmunds.com editor-in-chief. Edmunds.com commended brand new Mustang's retro styling, performance, and affordable price. Mustang is one of the award-winning vehicles of Ford. As a fact, the award from Edmunds.com is just a part of the string of significant accolades given to said vehicle.
In an interview, Kevin Smith of Edmunds.com said, "Without the uncanny success of the Mustang, with its retro styling cues, V8 rumble, brash manner and affordable price, GM and DaimlerChrysler would surely not have bothered replaying these oldies." This statement is anchored on what writer's call the 'Pony Car Wars' a domestic automaker battle. Said war started out some forty years ago. Now, the automakers are reliving the scene. The name of the game is Pony Car Wars and the most domineering muscle car will reign.
"We embrace the Pony wars," said James Owens, Mustang marketing manager. "Mustang is the authentic American muscle car. In fact, Mustang is the only one of the original pony cars from the 1960s to live on into the 21 st century with no interruption in production."
Ford Mustang, an American muscle car, was first produced in 1964. It was first unveiled to the public at the New York World's Fair in that same year. After 43 years from its inception, Mustang remains in production.
In 2004, a completely redesigned Mustang was introduced at the North American International Auto Show. Ford Mustang auto parts integrated in the new vehicle were assembled on an all-new D2C platform. This year, the 'Pony Package' was offered for the V6 model. Said model is also equipped with unique Ford Mustang grille, upgraded suspension, wider tires, Bulitt-style wheels, rear deck spoiler, special emblems, special door stripping, and more.
Time is changing and Mustang goes with the change. Nonetheless, the change is certainly for the betterment of its status. Experts are saying that the secret behind Mustang's longevity is its appeal to a wide range of purchasers. "The 2007 Ford Mustang represents a deft blend of classic American muscle car styling cues and modern design," wrote the editors of Edmunds.com "Whether you choose a V6 or V8, a coupe or convertible, this is one of the best values on the market for consumers seeking traditional rear-wheel-drive performance."

Ford, to Introduce Bullitt Edition Mustang in 2007

Author: Jay Stevens
Ford is aiming to produce several versions of performance retro-Mustangs; it will start next year with the introduction of a Bullitt edition. The automaker also intends to bolster versions of MKS, Lincoln flagship.
“We're not just going to put it out there and let the thing die a slow death. We're going to continue freshening this Mustang every single year. In 2007 we've got the new Bullitt version of the Mustang coming out, and I just wish I could talk about the '08s, '09s and '10s," said Jeff Wood, Ford's vehicle program director.
Wood also added that a different Mustang package will be introduced each year until 2010. Mustang is one of the popular cars in Ford lineup these days. To further enhance the image and popularity of the car, the automaker will be incorporating several modifications in special edition Mustangs.
The Bullitt edition Mustang is equipped with a 310-plus horsepower V8 with a lowered suspension and a special interior design. Bullitt edition boasts its classic Ford Mustang parts that convey toughness and longevity. The first retro-styled edition of the vehicle is also given sturdy Ford Mustang wheels.
2007 Bullitt also features plain grille without galloping pony badge or spotlights and a black-painted panel between the taillights. It is intended to resemble the McQueen's '68. Bullitt's artistic design sculpture was created by Italdesign Giugiaro, a company that's sculpted vehicles for many of the world's automakers. The car also uses the plastic wing, retro-style gauges, seats, steel fuel door, and ground effects add-ons conventional to special-edition Mustangs in favor of signature dark green paint. Said version will be available in Highland Green.
The name 'Bullitt' of the first retro-Mustang came from the movie featuring iconic 1968 390 GT, which was used by Steve McQueen. The remarkable movie is still hot at the present time. It still makes hearts beat faster.
The production Mustang was based on Ford Falcon compact. Its first production rolled off in 1964 at Dearborn, Michigan plant. The car was introduced via all three American television networks that time. Said introduction was one of the most successful in car history. After so many decades, Mustang is still one of Ford pride vehicles.

Mustang Muscle Car, Ready to Race

Author: Chuck Smith
Ford aficionados and race fans can now scream their lungs out. This is because Ford Mustang is now made more rugged and powerful to conquer race tracks. Recently, Ford Motor Company in cooperation with Miller Motorsports Park (MMP), has equipped a fleet of Mustangs with high-performance race parts.
Ford Mustang auto parts are given a crucial boost via add-ons. These add-ons convert the American muscle cars into race-prepped thoroughbreds. Said racing and parts are available to any Mustang owner from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog at any Ford dealership.
Mustang is an American car that is based on Falcon compact. Its first production was a white convertible with red interior. The aftermath of said production was introduced at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964. Two days after, it was launched via all American television networks. That that, said launch was considered the most successful in the industry. After quite a few redesigns and modifications, Mustang is still doing great in the automotive market. After 43 years of existence, Mustang is brought to a new level. This time it is designed to handle the complex and nerve-racking world of racing.
Jaime Allison, manager of Ford Racing Performance Group said, "We're thrilled to again have a relationship with a driving school program. Ford Racing has become a Charter Member of the new, state-of-the-art Miller Motorsports Park. Our relationship is more than just a sponsorship; it is rooted in a technical development program that began before the facility was even complete. We've been working with the team at MMP for over a year now developing, testing and proving-out the 20 Mustangs and I'm proud to say, they're ready to go."
The Drag Pack offered by the company provides extra boost to Ford Mustang engine parts. In fact, with it the driver can imagine to shave a half-second off quarter mile estimated times. The car can generate 35 more horsepower than Mustang GT. The Handling Pack, which includes tuned dampers, springs, sway bars and strut tower brace, is suited to any 2005-07 Mustang GT Coupe.
Aside from the 2 packs, the car is also equipped with 18-inch Ford Mustang wheels, racing mufflers, performance radiator, racing stripe kit, brakes, safety harness, and more.
"This relationship to outfit Miller Motorsports Park's fleet of Mustangs with high-performance parts is the culmination of all our Ford Racing Performance Packs on Mustang from the FR1, FR2, FR3 and on," said Allison. "Everyone in our office has been involved in this program."

Convertible Season Pulls Ford Mustang Sales

Author: KatieJones
To some enthusiasts the purchase was just a spur-of-the-moment decision. That is how Katy Long of Novi, Mich., ended up purchasing the new Mustang. "I have always wanted a convertible, that's absolutely what it is," says the 26-year-old automotive lease renewal specialist, who took delivery of her dark grey Mustang GT from Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor, Mich., recently. "I wanted to make the best of the upcoming spring and summer, so I decided to make the move and I'm thrilled with it."
It is convertible season once again and this time of the year gives Mustang the edge to attract and turn enthusiasts into buyers. Open air driving gives off a satisfying sense of adventure. And that sense of adventure lets enthusiasts grab Mustang’s door handle to eventually enjoy a free-spirited ride.
"In many markets, customers are emerging from the thaw and have a renewed interest in life and convertibles," said George Pipas, the Ford manager for U.S. Sales Analysis and Reporting. "Springtime has always been a part of Mustang's magic since it was introduced in April of 1964." Pipas said when it comes to Mustang convertible sales, the so-called "spring selling season" actually extends well into the month of August.
"That six-month period (March through August) represents more than two-thirds of Mustang convertible sales," Pipas noted. "Roughly one in every four Mustangs we sell is a convertible, and that is essentially the case, year in and year out."
To some states, the convertible season lasts most of the year. This fact is confirmed by Galpin Ford in North Hills, Calif. The dealership, the leading Ford dealer in Mustang sales, has allotted a part of its showroom for the pony car alone. "We had talked about doing something special with Mustang for a while," said Al Joseph, the Galpin sales manager. "Arguably, this most recent redesign (2005 model year) has been one of the most successful Mustangs ever. I think it resonated with Mustang buyers in a way that we haven't seen since the first time it was introduced."
"A large part of the Mustang mystique is its consistency over time," said Robert Parker, the Ford Division car marketing manager. "Great brands that deliver a consistent message over a long period of time are the ones that become the most iconic. One could argue it (Mustang) is among the strongest brands in the world, as it relates to automotive."
"We're moving into our third full year with this current body style and we've been able to maintain Mustang's sales momentum," said Dan Geist, the Mustang marketing manager. Geist added one way Ford is keeping Mustang relevant is through the introduction of special-edition models, like the 2007 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500, dubbed as the most powerful factory-built Mustang in history. Geist concluded, "In fact, Mustang is the only one of the original vintage sports cars from the 1960s that lives on into the 21st century with no interruption in production."

Ford Mustang

Author: Michael Hudson
Prominent among the characteristics of living things is the growth propensity. The conceived living organism in this regard is technology. It is about the fastest growing but intangible entity known to history. Though takes its root from the human mind, it has dramatically overgrown that origin at inestimable proportions. Such is the scenario that determines the advancement of Ford Mustang.
Some analysts have claimed that Mustang was not an attractive car at birth. That sounds rather erroneous because they base their conclusion on the so called contemporary “state of the art” touch. Such an outlook had always been present in the earlier models. But man’s quest for new attraction, improved beauty and better quality remains insatiable. It is against this background that the latest Mustang has metamorphosed into its current flashy state.
It is outstandingly noteworthy that in the past four decades, Ford’s successive teams of engineers had relentlessly embellished the features and components of the Mustang. This had led to consistent surge in demand for this wonderful automobile.
A passionate look at the nose axis and the entire grille presents an amazingly exotic exterior. Making the frame more imposing is the round headlights. This combination has been found to be so efficient that they easily capture objects at long range.
The user friendly triangular windows can be quite compelling and fun to manipulate especially when the need arises to let in more fresh air. Hence they work in harmony with the air vent.
Not only is the new Mustang more roomy than its immediate predecessor, the seats offer a perfect world of comfort in a cruise. But the great delight of the guy behind the wheel is the round steering and the teasing gear shift. Without the fear of being controverted, one unique feature of Mustang that other car producers crave to emulate is the selectable rear lighting component just with a friendly tap on the appropriate button.
Affording the user a high level of satisfaction is the stability and durability mustered by this awesome vehicle.
Oftentimes some manufacturers get fired by wanton inability to maintain originality in their effort to improve their products.
Ford’s team of engineers will ever remain exceedingly praiseworthy for their feat of perfectly crafting old technology into their new found creativity. It’s simply astonishing.
Environmental factors such as customer resolutions are tough to control by manufacturers. But sufficient amount of quality relieves you of unwarranted fear characteristic of amateurish producers. The Mustang enthusiasts attribute their choice for it to a number of features. While some find their craze in the automatic transmission, some applaud the acceleration and top speed, others find joy in its displacement and maximum bhp. The bottom line is a revelation of well rounded quality mix.

The Ford Mustang-how a Pony Grew Into a Stallion!

Author: Don Levy
In March 1964 Ford debuted as one the most popular cars ever built. It was the car that started the pony car craze and gave us a peek into what the world would know as the muscle car era. Although it was built in 1964 it was designated as a 1965. The ones built from March until July 31, 1964 are known as 1964 1/2 Mustangs and were some what different from the ones built from August 1 and later. Most of the differences were internal and the body were identical except for the hood being rolled under in the later ones. It was basically a Falcon with a new body and bucket seats. The ones built after July are known as 1965's and were a little more updated with such things as an alternator, adjustable passenger seat and a number of other engineering refinements. The pony interior with the running horses was offered also.
The Mustang probably had the biggest debut of any car ever made as it was introduced at the New York's World Fair and was the pace car for the Indianapolis 500. Over 4 million people visited the showrooms and 22,000 were ordered the 1st day. It sold 417,000 the first year which broke all previous automobile sales records.
The body styles were the coupe and convertible. No fastbacks were built until the 1965's came out in August. The engines were the U code 170 CI 6 cylinder, F code 260 V8 and the D code 289 V8 with 210 Horsepower. The GT came out in April 1965 and was offered in all 3 body styles. You had a choice of the A code 225 HP or K code 271 HP V8. The 271 HP almost qualified it as a muscle car. The 1st Shelby Mustangs, all fastbacks, came out in 1965 and was really a hotrod with no backseat and hopped up to 306 HP.
1966 didn't see a lot of changes in the body except for the pony in the grill, side trim and restyled gas cap. The G.T. 350 came out in 1966 and Hertz ordered 1,001 of them for rental cars or "Rent-a Racers" as they were known as. Many Sundays they could be found at the dragstrip or road race course. There was a rumour at the time that a number of them were rented and the engines swapped with the renter's engine and returned to the dealer. True or not it makes a heck of a story. This was also the first year for the High Country Special sold in Colorado and Wyoming. The Shelby GT350 was available with a 289cid that put out 390hp and likely qualified it as a muscle car. In 1967 the Mustang had the 1st body redesign, although it wasn't a major one, mostly trim and grill. The biggest change was on the fastback where the top went all the way to the rear of the car. The convertible had a glass rear window for the 1st time.
It was the last year for 289 Hi-Po and the first year for the 390cid and 428cid engines. The GT350 had the 289cid Hi-Po while the GT500 got the 428cid. The 390cid could be had in all 3 body styles. This was the only year for the GTA which had an automatic transmission and could be had with the 289 or 390 in all 3 body styles. Only 400 High Country Specials were build in 1967.
The Chevy Camaro, Mercury Cougar, Pontiac Firebird and Plymouth Barracuda were all in the same class as the Mustang and cut into their sales, but they still outsold their nearest competitor, the Cougar by a three to one margin.
The 1968 was little changed in appearance from the 1967. The 427cid of Cobra fame came out in he GT's. Equipped With disc brakes, racing tires and heavy duty suspension it was race ready right off the showroom floor. Mustang racer Bob Tasca efforts to build the 428 Cobra Jet was rewarded by Ford building 2,817 instead of the just 50 intial run he asked for. This was the last year for the High Country Special and a California Special was available for this year only. All the Specials were coupes.
In 1969 things really changed, the engine line had 7 different size engines and although the body had the same look it was 4 inches longer and a little wider. The engines ranged from the 2 little 6 cylinders, a regular and a Boss 302cid, 2 different 351cid, the 390cid, the Cobra Jet and Cobra Jet-R 428cid all the way up to the monster, Boss 429. The original body styles were still around, but now they were joined by the Mach 1, the Boss and the Grande. This was the last year for the GT.
The Mach 1 was basically a fastback GT with upgrades. It came with 351cid, 390cid or the Cobra Jet 428.The Grande was for the luxury buyer, with many upgrades. The Boss 302 was built to race in the TransAm series where the Camaro had beat them in 1968. They almost won it in 1969. This was the year of the Boss 429 debut, which was the Nascar version engine.
1970 was a happier year for Ford as the Boss 302 won the Trans-Am Series. Very few changes were made to the cars. The Boss 429cid came out with a hemi-head that required suspension modifications so it would fit.The 390cid was done away with. Ford built 2 1970 Boss 429 Lawmen Mustangs to tour with the U.S. troops. Only 1 of the 1,200-horsepower monsters survives today and is owned by wrestler Bill Goldberg.
In 1971 the Mustang gained one inch in wheelbase and every other dimension grew. The Mach 1 could now be had with the 429cid although the 302cid was standard. The Boss 302 and Boss 429 were both dropped in favor of the Boss 351. Like 1970 there wasn't too much exciting happening in the Ford camp. It was like they knew the end was near.
1972 saw the end of the Mustangs wild ride. The pony had grown into a stallion, but like the stallions of the old West it's end was near. The 429cid engine was dropped which meant that the largest engine was now the 351cid. Although the High Output version put out a respectable 275hp it was a far cry from the advertised 376hp (reputed to be much higher) the Boss 429 put out. In my estimation this was the last year for the Ford muscle cars although in reality it was 1970 as the engine cubic inches and horsepwer went the way of the dodo bird in the 1971 models.
I hate to even mention the 1973 because of the hatchet job that was done on the Mustang and other muscle cars. This was even the last year for the convertible. The 351cid was down to a wimpy 266hp. The Mustang with any kind of muscle was dead and would not really get revived until recently.
Due to the short but rich history of the real Mustangs we need to keep on restoring or preserving them so that the kids of today can have a chance to own a piece of history that will never come around again. Remember, restore them don't crush them.

Ford Mustang Gets Glass Roof

Author: Anthony Fontanelle
Ford Motor Company's Mustang model, dubbed as America’s favorite muscle car will be celebrating its 45th anniversary in the automotive market. As a part of the celebration, Ford will answer the needs of consumers who want more natural light in their cars when driving by providing them a third roof option.
For the 2009 model year, Ford will add up the Ford Glass Roof Mustang in the company's product lineup. This new roof option will be available over the V6 powered Mustang as well as the high performance Mustang GT model starting at the summer of 2008. In addition, Ford offers the Glass Roof Mustang because of the increasing production of sunroofs in North America by about 200 percent.
According Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president, Global Product Development:“Mustang is an icon in our product lineup, and we are committed to keeping Mustang news fresh every year. As the automotive landscape becomes increasingly competitive, features such as a panoramic glass roof will help differentiate our products from the competition.”
With a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,995, the new glass roof is expected to provide customers with a less expensive option that a convertible model without compromising the versatility and climate-controlled environment of the coupe, according to Ford. The Glass roof of the Ford Mustang is made of tinted privacy glass. This allows the glass roof to reduce infrared rays and vehicle cool-down time by about 50 percent. The glass roof is also equipped with a built in manual roller blind that allows owners to further control exposure on the sun. Moreover, according to Ford, the glass roof also "protects interior fabric material from solar radiation deterioration and discoloration by reducing solar light transmittance" and "features a layer of vinyl that reduces noise, vibration and harshness."
Assembled at the Automotive Alliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, the glass roof for the Ford Mustang is a safety glass, which means it will not shatter with sharp and jagged edges unlike other typical glasses used in the automotive industry.
Paul Randle, chief nameplate engineer also commented: “Quality is a continuous process. The whole team is passionate about it, which results in our paying attention to the smallest details. Our owners have high expectations, and we always want to meet them – with strong features like this new roof option, quality and performance.”
Other upcoming Ford Mustang models next year include the Mustang Bullitt and the powerful Shelby GT500KR, which will arrive in dealerships to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Shelby Cobra GT500KR. Anyway, customers can also get Acura models like the CL equipped with Acura CL cold air intake while waiting for these Mustang models to arrive in showrooms.

Buy Your Ford Mustang Online at a Great Price

Author: Jorge Gurza
If you want to buy your Ford Mustang online at a great price, you have to do so with your eyes wide open. It is easier if you want a new car that is fully protected by the manufacturer's warranty, although even then you have to be careful.
Even a new car could have stood outside a dealer's showroom unprotected from the elements all winter, and you certainly have to look at it before you buy. That goes with any car, let alone a pony car, and while it is easy to but online from a site a few hundred miles away, how are you going to check it out before you clinch the deal? As long as you understand the pitfalls as well as the benefits, then you can carry on with a degree of confidence.
A guarantee or warranty from the seller regard condition of bodywork is an absolute must, and if that is refused then you must think that there must be a reason. The vast majority of car salesmen are honest, no matter what you are led to believe, but they should be willing to back that honesty up with a guarantee.
Ford Mustangs can be driven hard and that means that the maintenance must be good. Most Mustang owners love their cars and look after them, but there are the few that don't. Be careful if the price seems unusually low, even for online, since you can more than exceed the money you saved by spending a fortune on repairs a few weeks down the road. The standard of that maintenance might also be questionable, because a lot of people go for afterparts because they are cheaper, but these are not always as good as parts from the original manufacturer.
Before buying you should ask the seller for everything needed to identify the vehicle: its model, year, place of manufacture, and details of the engine, transmission and so on. When inspecting the vehicle make sure that details on the ID plate by the driver's door ties up with the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) under the hood (or on the dash after 1968). If they don't tally, or if you can't find the plates, then don't buy the car.
The parts of your Mustang that could go wrong, and be very costly to you, include the chassis, bodywork, drivetrain and suspension. The drivetrain especially can be expensive, and unless you are a mechanic the best way is to pay for a qualified vehicle inspector. A corroded chassis could mean that your lovely new Ford Mustang is fit only for the scrapheap, and even a new engine and gearbox is very expensive. You could buy another used car for cheaper.
The signs to look for in your test drive are squeaks and squeals, rattles and oil spots when parked. The gears should change smoothly and quietly without being forced and there should be no rust. A good driver who takes care of the car will keep the bodywork immaculate. After your test drive, keep looking: don't buy right away. Shop around online and get an idea of the market price for the model you just checked out. If you are buying online you might have to hire a local expert to carry out the test drive for you.
If you are still interested, check out the history of your model and year. Take note of the various changes and make sure that the description fits your car. You will be able to choose with much more knowledge if you understand the history of the car, and the way it has developed over the years. You will also be able to show a degree of know-how when you speak to dealers, who might then be less liable try to take advantage and sell you a lemon. Dealers are always more wary with customers that show that they know what they are talking about.
You should also have a clear vision of what you want your car for. If you want a car just to drive around in than a Cobra might be more suitable for you than a powerful GT. So keep your intended use in mind, and then check up on the average prices of the type of Ford Mustang you are looking for. Kelley Blue Book and NADA will provide you with the book price of any specific Mustang model and year of manufacture, so you will know if you are being overcharged or not. It is always best to be armed with the proper prices when you are looking to buy a used car.
The main problem with buying online is that the seller could be a long way away from your home town, and you might not find it easy to actually see the car before buying it. If this is the case, make sure you have a money back guarantee should the car prove faulty or not as advertised. Some buyers in that kind of situation employ a local mechanic or auto service company to check over the car and provide a report. At least then you can be sure that the car has been examined by an expert.
You could ask for photocopies or scanned files of the service and repair history, but there is very little else you can do when purchasing from a distance. It is possible to get some great bargains online, and probably the best tip is to pay by credit card if possible, since you then have some degree of protection. However, the vast majority of online automobile transactions are completely honest and you will generally get what you pay for.
It is even possible to buy your Ford Mustang online on eBay, and you can get some great prices that way. As long as you know what you want and what price to expect, and take some common sense precautions in having the vehicle inspected before use, there is no reason why you cannot clinch a great online deal for your Ford Mustang, and get a good car online at a great price.

The Ford Mustang

Author: Ethan Langevin
The Ford Mustang was first produced in 1964 at a plant in Dearborn, Michigan and first introduce at the New York World's Fair that same year. As time went on its history can be divided into four periods cleverly called generations one through five. The first generation lasted until around 1973 and the car was primarily designed around the idea of the Ford Falcon, an earlier car. In 1974 the second generation began and it lasted for about four years until 1978. It was designed around the Ford Pinto and some of its improvements included rack and pinion steering and a new frame that provided for a quieter and smoother ride. The third generation of mustangs lasted from 1979 to 1993, considerably longer the previous two generations. The new features of this generation included more trunk space and a completely redesigned interior that allowed for the seating of up to four people. The convertible was also introduced and became popular at this time. The fourth generation of mustangs started in 1994 to 2004. At this time the mustang was completely redesigned and the most popular models were equipped with slightly bigger engines. Also the convertible aspect began to disappear from production during this period. The fifth generation of mustangs started in 2005 and continues today. It was redesigned again at this time and its style became more similar to the mustangs of the sixties as opposed to those of the third and fourth generation. Its engine was also bigger than that of previous generations of Ford Mustang. That is pretty much all of the basic information about the ford mustang.

Ford Mustang - Fast Sport Cars

Author: IC
Ford is a well known brand across the world, it owns 33% of Mazda known by its modern cars featured in films such as the Fast and the Furious, Jaguar, Aston Martin and many others. From its many car models, one of the most famous is the Mustang. Manufactured and engineered to be a muscle car, this particular car model stands away from the rest by it unique design and power. The best part is that due to this model's reputation the company keeps improving and redesigning it to deliver a high quality driving machine every single time.
Ford Mustangs are highly customizable sport cars and in recent years have shown many modifications to its design. The wheelbase in both versions (convertible and coupe) are 101.3 inches, the curb weight varies just a tiny bit from the convertible to the coupe models, the curb weight of a mustang 2 door convertible is 3257 pounds while the two door coupe is 3077 pounds. As far as fuel capacity both models, convertible and coupe can hold up to 15.4 gallons. Both models can comfortably accommodate 4 passengers.
As far as design, second and third Mustang generations were not as good as the first one but the machinery quality improved. Second and third generations range from 1974-1993. During the 1980s Mustangs were going through a hard transition when Ford announced that they would replace the rear-wheel drive Mustang with a Mazda-derived four wheel drive version, luckily for them and its clients the fourth generation of Mustangs came along, this generation of fords is almost as welcomed as the first due to the significant redesign this model went through.
The 1994 Mustang coupe was starting to show signs of potential and greatness but it wasn't until 1995 when the GTS model was introduced to the market. In 1996 Mustang's engine went through a major upgrade, this is when the Windsor 5.0 L engine was replaced by 215 horse power 4.6L SOHC Modular V8 engine and in 1998 the SOHC engine was increased to 225 HP through aggressive PCM calibration a larger exhaust and a modified fuel system.
As far as power, the 3.8 V6 engine sent developed 145-190 horsepower, the GT 5.0L V8 sends 240 hp to the back axle.
In 1994-2004 models Mustang GT's power was increased to 260hp and consumers have loved this car ever since, that's not even mentioning the awesome "MODs" available which include new decals, bumpers, paint work, rims, etc. Not only it is extremely reliable and stylish but many consumers have reported that it's stereo system beats any other manufacturer-installed car stereo in the market, it has an extremely good bass, the midrange is perfectly set as well as the highs.
Aston Martin is also an outstanding fast and high end Ford-owned driving machine which delivers great power, speed and style but that's another article.

How to Find Ford Mustang Parts Online

Author: Jorge Gurza
If you have a Ford Mustang, it deserves the best care that you can give it, and that includes good maintenance. Although owning a Mustang is a privilege, it can also pose some problems because of the number of changes that have taken place practically every year since that famous day in April, 1964, when it was released to the world.
Forget the demo models that were displayed at the various grand prix circuits from 1962; it was 1964 that can truly be regarded as the birth of the Ford Mustang as we know it. If you own of these original cars, then it is not only worth a fortune, but you will have a few problems finding parts for it. And that should get you thinking: if you are a Mustang owner, how do you get the proper parts for your car, new, used or aftermarket.
Many purists won't even consider aftermarket parts, but they can be just as good as the original, and sometimes even better. They can certainly be cheaper, and usually are, but can also be inferior, and it is always good to know somebody that has found a good source of Mustang aftermarket parts.
It is also good to know a bit about your car, and you can gain a lot by knowing your Mustang and what makes it tick. It makes it much easier to get a good part from a breaker's yard and also to fit it yourself. However, many people prefer to find their parts online, mainly because it is easier to find the part you are looking for your year and model of car, and it also a lot less work!
There is no doubt that the internet has made it much easier to shop for auto parts, and you can find just about every Mustang part you are looking for online. Not only standard parts, but you can also locate add-ons to allow you customize your Mustang and make it personal to you. headlights, floor mats, fenders, transmissions, clutches, and even brake cables: you name it, you can get it online. However, you have to make sure that the site you are visiting is reputable, and are not selling cleaned-up used parts as new. It isn't common, but it does happen.
You also have to be certain exactly what part you have fitted. You will need your model and the year, and there are also other things you might have to know in order to get the right part. Take your transmission, for instance. If you need a new Mustang clutch, you will have to know what type of transmission you have. Check out ID tag on the jam of the driver's door. Look for the letters 'TR' to the bottom right hand side of the tag, and you should see from one to five letters and/or numbers below the TR. The first identification number or letter tells you the type of transmission you have, and you can then order a clutch for that transmission. You can also order a new gear shifter using that information.
For example, the 1996 ' 98 Mustang Cobras and 1996 ' 2001 GTs were fitted with the TD-45 five speed manual OD transmission which is identified with the number 6, while the more modern Mustang 2005-07 Mustang GTs were fitted with a T-3650, the same as the 2003-05 Mach1 and the 2001 Cobra. The T-3650 transmission is identified by the letter K. It is a great help to sourcing your clutch or gear shift parts if you know your transmission. Any other numbers after the first one relate to the front and rear springs, which might be useful if your springs have gone.
The door might not be original, of course, and to determine that compare the V.I.N. (Vehicle Identification Number) with that under the hood for models up to 1967, or on the dashboard for after that. Once you have the vehicle I.D. you should find it easy to get any standard part for your vehicle online.
All you have to do then is to carry out an internet search using your favorite search engine. You can be specific, by naming the actual part, or simply carry out a general search for Mustang parts. The site you choose will then lead you to the part you want by means of menus. You might be asked simply for the model and year, or for the V.I.N. number or something even more specific, such as the transmission reference as detailed above. Whatever method is used, you should be able to locate and order the part you want.
It is easy to find Ford Mustang parts online, especially if you go to a site that has a good clear navigation system from their landing page. The most important aspects of buying Mustang parts online are that you get the right part for your year and model, and that they are of good quality. Keep that in mind, and you should not go wrong.

The Ford Mustang Auto Was Not The First American Pony Muscle Car

Author: Terry Z. Voster
Some auto and sports car enthusiasts will insist and swear on their life that the sports car that got it all going in America was the Mustang. After all the Ford Mustang was fast cheap and popular and got the whole "Muscle Car" era going. On top of that they may insist that if there were no mustang there would have never been any Camaro or the other whole host of "Pony Cars" It may well be true that buyer demand in the muscle car market segment had been and was created largely by the Mustang car but actually this had all started long before the Mustang ponycars arrived on the American automotive landscape.
Interest in sporty ,close-coupled compacts that could seat two comfortably as well as four in a pinch goes all the way back to 1956. That was the first year when Studebaker fielded its first "Hawks" - nimble, fast road machines that looked different and performed considerably better than the average family sedan. Then later in 1958, Ford punched out its two-seat Thunderbird out to a four-seat configuration which also introduced a radically new body design that met with overwhelming acceptance. To the response, the dominant American automotive manufacturer replied with the Pontiac Grand Prix in 1962 as well as the stunning four places Buick Riviera the following year.
Similar concepts followed in the wings such as Oldsmobile's Tornado in 1966. The race was now fully on and underway.
Until Mustang however, four seat "personal" cars had been mainly upper-price luxury models which were not affordable by the masses of car buyers. This was especially true for young men just starting out with their work careers or working part time after school. However it was not only Ford that was eyeing and evaluating of what became the Mustang's appreciative and enduring target market. Stylists, engineers and the marketing crew were thinking about some car product in the lower-price segment and class a good six years before the Mustang made its entry and debut in 1964. In the end the fly in the ointment of this project to bring a similar automotive product to market was a lack of real corporate interest. Talk about opportunity lost and not seeing the trees from the forest - or in case the highways and interstates from the roads.
Interestingly enough G.M. had missed the boat when it failed to notice the excitement by the general public of its accidental development of an inexpensive "Sports Car" to the American automotive market. It can be said that the first low priced "personal" car was the Chevrolet Corvair. Chevrolet had subtly introduced bucket seats to its Corvair sports coupe in the 1960 model year. Compared to its other lineups in its stable the Corvair sports coupe sold like hotcakes. The expression regarding the sales of Mustangs was they sold like donuts, Corvair sports coupes sold like hotcakes. The offering was a hot product - a real eye popper. These cars were offered in color-keyed interiors, the trademark comfortable vinyl bucket seats and in the 1961 model year the option of a fast four speed gearbox.
The marketing message may have eluded General Motors and their top executives but it sure was not lost on their competitors. Ford and Chrysler, both taking the cue rushed to equip their similar products in a similar way. For the Ford Motor Company it was time to dress up their "compact "car the Ford Falcon. In the case of Chrysler the Valiant line got the treatment.
The Mustang was not the first of the "Pony "muscle cars. Indeed Ford was even the originator of the concept. The concept and market did not originate overnight. While it took time for fruition it was Ford's fortune of both bringing the product to market. The lessons may have been lost to others but Ford was both focused enough and nimble enough to accomplish the task. In terms of absolute cars sales the Ford Falcon based Mustang cars sold 100,000 units in their first month and a full million cars in their first year. What an auto sales record and accomplishment.

History of The Great Ford Mustang

Author: Jorge Gurza
As far as the consumer is concerned, the history of the great Ford Mustang began when it was shown to the public at New York's World Exhibition. The prototypes had been in existence since 1962, with the Mustang 1 (T-5) being first introduced to the motor racing world at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix where Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney drove it for a few laps each as a demo.
In the early 1960s, Ford desperately needed a new car to compete with the sporty Chevrolet Corsair Monza, and its first attempt, the Falcon Future, failed to compete. A brand new car was needed, and the idea for the Mustang was born. It was sporty and quick and a four seater. It was appealing to youngsters, and the prototype was well received when shown at the motor racing circuits.
It went in production in 1964, and was an instant hit. Its launch on 17th April, 1964 was the beginning of what was to be the most popular car ever in American history, and it sold half a million in its first year. Its customers included every age and it was equally popular to men and women.
Many of its parts were taken from the failed Falcon, and its immediate success had as much to do with the almost perfect advertising campaign as it had to do with looks and speed. The advertising power of the three major television networks was used extensively, and with its distinctive mane and tail galloping across the red, white and blue of America the 'Pony Car' was the phenomenon of its age, representing the flavor of the 1960s more perfectly than its designers could ever have dreamt possible.
It was a car of its day that arrived with perfect timing. Later to be called the 1964 1/2, the original Mustang was available as a convertible and as a coupe, both with chrome wrap-around fenders, the distinctive chrome grill with running pony, and a lengthened hood. Although it claimed to have four seats, the back seat was a bit small and it also sported three tails lights on each side. It has sold a million by 1966, although before that the GT and fastback model had been introduced.
The car continued to progress, and by the end of the 60s had become longer by four inches, and a lot heavier than the original, much of this in response to the development of Chevrolet's Firebird and Pontiac. It was the Corvette, however, that brought the Mustang into the road racing arena. The Mustang was so popular, especially with the young, that Ford were desperate to race it against the Corvette. However, only production two seaters were allowed to race, and to enable them to do this at least 100 two seaters had be produced by January 1965.
This was achieved with the help of Mustang fan and racer, Carol Shelby, who modified 100 of the 2+2 models into GT 350 models, in the process re-equipping them to render them more suitable for racing. The suspension, wheel and brakes were all modified, and the cars were to become the basis of many future models that are even now are much sought after.
During the early 1970s the Mustang lost its way a bit and became a bit too big and unwieldy. The original grace and elan that so attracted early admirers was lost, and it becamejust another car. Part of this was due to emissions regulations, but sales dropped so much that Ford had to rethink its design strategy with the Mustang.
The Mustang II was introduced in 1974, and although it was small and vastly underpowered, it takes its place in the history of the car because it brought to a halt the drop in sales. It sold because of economy in fuel, and the 1973 OPEC fuel embargo. People were afraid that a gas guzzler would hurt their pockets, and so temporarily went for the smaller car. However, this did not last long, and 1975 brought back the V8 engine to the Mustang. However, although it had a 5 liter engine, the carburetor was too small and the catalytic converter combined with that to render it lifeless.
Then came a period of relative stability although there were a few trim changes. Fans must have seen the end coming because the late 1970s saw a slight increase in sales, rather than the drop that model now deserved. The Cobra II and King Cobra versions did little to spark a return to the glory days for the 1960s, and Ford made a last ditch attempt to rewrite the Mustang in 1979. The new Mustang was available as a coup' or fastback with a bit more room inside than the either the original or the ill fated Mustang II.
However, the running horse had gone, and the rear lights lost their distinctive three segments: this expanded to six, while the side scallop also disappeared. It no longer resembled a Mustang! Alterations continued to be made, and the California Highway Patrol found a use for a special coupe model as a high speed pursuit vehicle. With its 157 HP V8 engine, this car was used by a number of law enforcement agent up until 1993, when Ford killed them off.
The fans were wrong, however, and development continued as the Mustang conformed with the coming of fuel injection, air bags and other essential improvements, though the original concept had completely disappeared. In 2005 Ford finally ditched the ancient Fox platform and introduced that now used for the Lincoln and the Thunderbird. The newest Mustang has reverted to some of the original features, and it is a miracle that the car has survived so long.
Nobody involved in 1962 development team would have believed that the great Ford Mustang would still be around 45 years later.

American Icon: the Ford Mustang

Author: Jessica Vandelay
In 1964 the Ford Motor Company introduced the Mustang, selling more than one million cars in it’s just over a year. The Mustang was the beginning of a new class of sports car that would become known as “pony cars.” Ford product manager Donald N. Frey and Ford Division general manager Lee Iacocca conceived the prototype of the now classic car.

The Mustang was introduced to the public at the New York’s World Fair in 1964 and had the most successful launching in automobile history. In its first year and a half of production more than 1 million Mustangs were sold. Because the Mustang was introduced several months before the regular beginning of the production year, early Mustangs are often called 1964 and ? models. The Mustang’s original components were based on familiar and simple components to cut down on development and retail price. The chassis, suspension and drivetrain were developed from the Ford Falcon and Fairlane. Also gleaned from the 1964 Falcon were a unitized platform frame and welded box-section side rails. Read more about Mustang components in car magazines like Car and Driver magazine, Motor Trend magazine and Lowrider magazine.

The interior of the 1965 Mustang featured adjustable driver and passenger bucket seats, AM radio and a floor mounted gear shifter in a variety of colors. Throughout 1965 Ford added to the Mustang’s interior options like sun visors, mechanical remote-operated mirror and a bench seat. Ford’s Interior D?cor Group became known as “Pony Interior” because they embossed running ponies seats and armrests. Ford’s competitors GM and Chrysler were unprepared for the astonishing success of the Mustang. Chrysler introduced the Plymouth Barracuda just before the Mustang but it would be a few more years before the car became a revered Muscle car. GM had the rear-engine Corvair Monza but it did not sell well. It would take GM two years to produce the Mustang’s biggest competitors: the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. Lincoln-Mercury also hit the market with the successful “upmarket Mustang” Mercury Cougar. In later years the Mustang inspired coupes like the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri. Read more about the evolution of Ford Mustang and its competitors in popular magazines like Car and Driver magazine, Motor Trend magazine and Lowrider magazine.

The Mustang has seen many redesigns. Currently there are five generations of Mustangs. Ford also produced many performance models of the Mustang including the Boss 302 Mustang, Mach 1 and SVO. Independent car designers like Carroll Shelby, Roush Performance and Saleen have also produced special Mustang models including what is known as the Shelby Mustang. Mustangs have appeared in many movies—more than any other vehicle--helping along the iconic status. Classic movies like the James Bond movie Goldfinger, Bullit with Steve McQueen and The French Connection with Gene Hackman. More modern movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, Vanilla Sky and Runaway Bride. In the 1980s a futuristic fictional 2015 model was featured in Back to the Future II.

Pony Car Warrior in Ford Mustang

Author: Chuck Smith
Ford is proud to unleash its redesigned version of Mustang. Said vehicle is a revived version of the automaker's classic muscle car. Ford rivals in said segment are active in the competition. In fact, there is a great possibility that an all out pony car war among automakers will take effect.
"We embrace the Pony wars," says James Owens, Mustang marketing manager. "Mustang is the authentic American muscle car. In fact, Mustang is the only one of the original pony cars from the 1960s to live on into the 21st century with no interruption in production."
Owens added, "Mustang has two kinds of buyers. People under 40 and people over 40. That sounds like a joke but its true. Our target customer "Drew" is a younger person who likes the Mustang because its basically cool. But our consumption customer is the baby boomer. These are people who no longer need the mini van or SUV and who fondly remember the Mustang of their youth."
Ford noted that Mustang production streak is destined to continue. This is because the sales proved to be soaring. In fact, in September this year, Ford yielded more than 30 percent increase in sales. Mark Fields, executive vice president and president, the Americas, confirmed that a new Mustang variation will be introduced annually.
Upgraded Ford Mustang parts accessories deliver the new appeal of the new car. This is designed by Ford to prove that Mustang is growing up to evolve with the auto industry's metamorphosis. Ford Mustang auto parts also evolve with every model. Now that Ford is aimed at introducing fresh Mustangs every year, then it is to be anticipated that auto parts will be enhanced and upgraded accordingly. This is for the purpose of adjusting with the expanded market and the innovations in the auto industry.
Young and old alike can choose from 4 basic Mustang variations - Coupe or Convertible, available in Deluxe or Premium Arrays, in both GT and V6. Also available is the V-6 Pony Package which includes a distinctive Pony grille, stripes, fog lights, 17-inch wheels and rear spoiler.
The editors of Edmunds.com expressed their appreciation to the redesigned Mustang, "Whether you choose a V6 or V8, a coupe or convertible, this is one of the best values on the market for consumers seeking traditional rear-wheel-drive performance."
Certainly, Mustang is determined to defend its standing as the leading pony in the corral called automotive world.

Buying A Used Ford Mustang

by: Modded Mustangs

The Ford Mustang is one of the most popular sports cars in America, with that comes a high demand for used Mustangs. Buying a new Mustang is as easy as choosing your options and driving off, however purchasing a used Mustang requires a great deal of care. Choosing the wrong car could cost you thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs.
As with any sports car, Ford Mustangs are often driven hard. With abuse comes the need for maintenance. If proper maintenance is not followed, your new ponycar will likely become a money pit. Fear not, tips for finding potential problems are just a couple paragraphs away.
Another cause for concern is the installation of aftermarket parts. Many Mustang owners install performance parts, often times performed by owners inexperienced in the field of automotive repair. These aftermarket parts may not only be hard on other vehicle parts, but they may also void the factory warranty.
Before purchasing your Mustang, be certain to inspect the vehicle thoroughly - especially the drivetrain. If you're not qualified to properly diagnose engine, transmission, rearend, or other potential problems you should take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic. You don't want to have a wore out rear end, it's no fun especially when your friends find out.
Some of the common symptoms of an abused Mustang include rattles and squeeks in the suspension, grinding gears in a 5 speed, and a noisy engine or drivetrain. Be certain to check for tire tread, especially the rear tires. Mustang owners like to do hellacious burnouts with no respect to the tire manufacturers hard work.
Good luck with your Mustang purchase. These ponycars can be fast and reliable with proper care. Be certain you're getting the value and performance per dollar you expect and make an educated buying decision.

History of the Ford Mustang

by: Teresa Frady

The Ford Mustang was first introduced in 1964, at the World Exhibition of New York, and Americans immediately fell in love with the car. Everyone flocked to Ford showrooms, scrambling to be the first to own a Mustang. Over 22,000 Mustangs were sold on the first day! Sales reached 418,000 in the first year.
The first Mustang became known as the 1964? and was available in two models, the coupe and the convertible. Features of both models included a lengthened hood and shortened rear deck, chrome wrap-around bumpers, chrome grill with a running horse, full wheel covers and a sporty interior. The cost for a standard Mustang was around $2,400. The GT and the fastback model were introduced in 1965.
The Shelby GT350 was also introduced in 1965. Its design was a collaboration between Ford and performance car legend, Carroll Shelby. Its goal was to create competition for the Chevy Corvette.
The Shelby GT500 Mustang was first released in 1967. It was powered by a 428 V8 engine and sported numerous luxury options. It was produced until 1970. A new version of the Shelby GT500, considered to be the most powerful factory-built Ford Mustang in history, will be released in 2006. Shelby Cobra GT500's supercharged 5.4-liter DOHC V-8 produces over 450 horsepower.
The 1967 Mustang sported simulated air-scoops and a larger grill and it was longer and appeared more aggressive. By 1969, the Mustang became bigger and heavier. New Mustangs were nearly four inches longer.
New models introduced in the 1969-1970 model year were the Grande, the Mach 1, the Boss 302 and the Boss 429. The Boss 351 model was introduced in 1971.
In 1974, the Mustang II was released. It was smaller and more fuel efficient than previous models. This was also the first year that a convertible was not sold, and the only year that a V8 engine wasn't available.
In 1976, the Cobra II package, which added a big rear spoiler, a fake hood scoop and blue stripes across white paint to a V8-powered fastback, was made available. It wasn't any faster than similarly powered Mustang II's, but it sure looked cool. The King Cobra, which was very similar to the Cobra II, debuted in 1978. Also in 1978, Ford stopped production on the Mustang II.
In 1982, the Mustang lineup included the GT hatchback, as well as the more luxurious series: L, GL and GLX. Evolving from its humble beginnings in 1982 to the hard-charging street performer of 1993, the third generation Ford Mustang GT has gained respect as one of the most versatile and popular Mustangs of all time. More than 450,000 of these cars were produced between 1982 and 1993.
The fourth generation Mustang was introduced in December 1993 and was way more aerodynamic than its predecessors, while still embodying the same personality and style. The special edition SVT Cobra, made its appearance in 1993; and in 2001, the special "Bullitt" edition Mustang GT coupe was released.
For the 2005 model year, Ford redesigned the Mustang for the first time since 1994. Ford gave its iconic car a retro look with round headlights, chrome details inside and a throaty roar when ac

Ford Mustang in the UK

by: Nick Roach

So, you are looking to purchase a new car, maybe a new mercedes C-Class, maybe a BMW 323?
These cars after-all come with a 'huge' 2.something litre engine which will whine its way up to 60 in probably around 9 seconds.
They will make people know that you are (a) successful (sales rep), and that you have chosen a quality car that. However, I feel that they have as much excitement and originality as a potato.
Why not spend the same money on a new Ford Mustang?
Its not as crazy an idea as you may think; the GT comes with a 4.6 V8 which accelerates from 0-60 in less than 6 seconds, can hit a speed limit well in excess of the law, and houses 300 horses under the bonnet.
It doesn't even guzzle that much fuel and can manage 25mpg.
But fuel economy is not the reason for buying one of these machines - a Mustang says something about you.
Pulling on to the motorway in your new 323i is a non-event. Nobody notices you (apart from the 325i driver wanting to show off his 'huge' engine power). Pull onto the motorway in your new 'Stang and its a whole different story - kids and grown-ups will point and stare!
Convertible GT's can be delivered on the road for around ?30,000 and the V6's start at around ?21,000.
There really is no excuse for owning any other vehicle! And with bodykits and Alloys from companies such as Roush and Saleen costing less than a set of wheels for your BMW you can not lose.

Buying a Ford Mustang

by: Chris Alexander

Looking at purchasing a new or used Ford Mustang?
If you enjoy affordable looks and power, the Ford Mustang is definitely the car for you. Before buying a Ford Mustang, you must know that there are many models out there ranging in power to suit whatever needs you may have. When looking at buying your Ford Mustang, first approach the seller and retrieve all the information necessary to identify the vehicle. After identifying the vehicle and you are still interested, take the Mustang for a test drive. After the test drive, leave without discussing a purchse, even if you love the car. Shop around; get a selection for yourself to chose from before purchasing your Mustang.
Before approaching any sellers about a Mustang, you need to know a little about the history of the Ford Mustang. Knowing the history of the car and the models and engine options available by year will prepare you for the first step of purchasing your Mustang. Also, the history of the Mustang may also make you a die-hard fan, and being a die-hard will make you notice every imperfection- a skill that comes in handy when purchasing a used late model car.
Your Needs
Perhaps you may just need a reliable daily driver and a Ford Mustang V6 could be your best option. If you want a nicer car with a V8, more power, aggression, and control, a GT Mustang model may suit your needs. If you want a sunny day car with a lot of stock power, a Cobra Mustang may suit you best. So before you start looking at different cars, decide what your practical uses will be and that will immediately narrow your search down for your Ford Mustang.
Also, what is your price range? Check NADA and Kelley Blue Book to see what to expect price-wise for a particular year and model Ford Mustang. After finding out what is in your budget, shop away!
Identify the Vehicle
Identify and validate the model of the car. Is the car the same car that came with the engine, transmission, interior, and exterior options as the car named on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)? To know this for sure, look into some VIN decoders or online services such as CarFax History Reports. Also, independent research of the car's history may be necessary because not all accidents are reported to authorities. The VIN number is a stamped plate bolted to the dash under the windshield of late model Mustangs. Also, look at and verify the engine code. The engine code is the 8th digit in the VIN, and the model year is coded in the 10th digit of the VIN. Also check and see if the vehicle is the stock color paint and notice any and all performed body work.
1) The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a stamped plate bolted to the dash under the windshield.
2) The EIN (Engine Identification Number) is also attached to the valve cover.
3) The Mustang should also have a certification label fixed at the drivers side door pillar.
4) The transmission identification tag is attached by the left side engine-to-bell housing bolt for manual transmission, and is attached to the right side on automatics.
5) The rear differential identification tag is bolted to the rear differential cover.
Test Drive
Now that you know if you are remotely interested in a Mustang out there, you should take it for a test drive and notice how she reacts to rpm changes, gear shifts, braking, turning, and extreme driving as well. Ask the owner for a repair and service data log sheet just before test-driving. If he has no log sheet for maintenance, you are already one hand up on the seller. Check the tire pressure, oil level, and lighting of headlights, brake lights, and turn signals before starting the engine. Now start the car and listen for any abnormalities in the engine sound.
Now, check all of the seat belts. Don't be surprised if the passenger side seat belts are on backwards- that is a common TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Ford. Check the interior wear and be sure to be writing down all of the imperfections you notice in the car at all. Check all of the power options, including the CD player.
Now you are ready to hit the road. Buckle up and take the car for a test drive. At first, drive normally to get the vehicle into proper operating conditions. After a warm-up, get on the throttle and note how the car performs at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Come to a compete stop and test the braking capabilities. Be sure to travel over a speed bump to test suspension components as well. After you perform your various tests to decide the mechanical structure of the Mustang, return it back to the seller and tell him you have a few more similar cars to go test drive but you will stay in touch.
Don't forget to log all of the imperfections and data on the car!
Decisions, Decisions
After you have test driven and experienced a handful of Ford Mustangs, compare the logs you have made about the work needed and maintenance to be performed to see what car will suit your needs best. Recall the seller's advertised price and compare that to NADA for high mileage cars, or Kelley Blue Book for lower mileage cars. NADA rewards cars with lower miles by adding to the seller’s price, but hinders high mileage cars by lowering the value for the specific year. Now that you know what Ford Mustang you want to negotiate on, you are ready to put your business skills to the test.
Negotiate
After narrowing your choices down into your budget, tastes, and preferences, return to the seller to negotiate. Always negotiate at Trade-In Value, and work up. Never pay more than book value for a car though, unless it is modified in a way that calls for such a price. But remember also; never pay more than half of what the seller paid for his modifications when purchasing a used car.
Finalize
Never pay cash. At least write a check and be sure to get some immediate and written receipt of payment for the vehicle to ensure your financial safety. Now, expect less than a week for the title to reach you for an in-state purchase, and expect no more than 2 weeks for a title on an out-of-state purchase. After receiving the title, go to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) to get a tag for the new title transfer. Be prepares to pay taxes that range in price based on area and car type to receive the title and tag. These fees are mandatory and fair to help pay for road maintenance, etc.
Enjoy
Now that you own your very own Ford Mustang, enjoy the car, modify if you wish, have fun with the new doors the Ford Mustang will open, and remember, we will see you on the road!
